Authorities in Mexico City say 30 police horses have stampeded down one of the capital’s busiest avenues, injuring one person and damaging 11 cars.

A police department statement says the hurt person had minor injuries, but a few other people were severely frightened. It says the city’s government will pay for damage to the vehicles.

Police say the horses were scared by sound of car engines Monday as they were being taken out of their trailers near Congress, where they helped control protesters.

Some of the animals had cuts on their muzzles and legs as they ran down the Circuito Bicentenario. Authorities say they are being treated by veterinarians.

A motorist filmed the saddled horses galloping among cars and posted the video on YouTube.
