On March 1st a group of attackers armed with knives stormed a Chinese train station, killing at least 29 and injuring more than 130 others before good guys with guns showed up to end the attack.
According to NBC News, “four of the attackers were shot dead,” and “one was captured alive.”
Yang Haifei was buying a ticket when attackers “dressed in black” rushed in and “starting stabbing people.” He said he ran when one of the attackers came at him “with a long knife;” as he ran he saw injured persons “[falling] on the ground.”
On February 28th Breitbart News covered a Chinese report criticizing the U.S. government for failing to use gun control to curtail the growth of private gun ownership in America.
China has used draconian gun control measures to keep the Chinese people disarmed. However, as the attack on March 1st reminds us, once a population is disarmed, a successful attack with more primitive weapons becomes feasible.
In the study “Would Banning Firearms Reduce Murder and Suicide?,” Don B. Kates and Gary Mauser address this by showing “that per capita murder overall is only half as frequent in the United States as in several other nations where gun murder is rarer, but murder by strangling, stabbing, or beating is much more frequent.”
