India Imports Nearly Three Times More Weapons Than China, Pakistan

According to AFP, India continues “to be the biggest buyer of arms in the world, importing nearly three times as many weapons as…China and Pakistan over the last five years.”

India passed China “as the world’s greatest arms buyer in 2010.”

The volume of weapons purchased by India “was up 14 percent in 2009-13, compared with the previous five years.” And it was up 111 percent compared to 2004-08.

Their share of “total global arms imports increased from 7 to 14 percent” in the last five years as well.

Seventy-five percent of India’s weaponry is imported from Russia. On top of this, India is the biggest buyer of U.S. weapons.

The “top five arms importers in the world [are] now India, China, Pakistan, the United Arab Emirates, and Saudi Arabia.”
