July 21 (UPI) — Two American tourists were stabbed in Athens, Greece, Tuesday morning, outside of the entrance to the Acropolis, and a man was arrested on the scene.
The incident happened at around 8 a.m. local time at the southern entrance to the Acropolis archaeological site, one of the busiest tourist sites in Athens.
The couple are reportedly Greek-Americans. The woman suffered a minor injury to her arm, and the man suffered a more serious injury to his leg.
Police from a motorcycle unit arrived first and bandaged the man’s leg to stop the bleeding. When an ambulance arrived, the couple were taken to a local hospital.
Just before the attack, police were called about a man with a knife threatening people at the entrance to the Acropolis. When police arrived, they were able to overpower the man and arrest him. No motive has been announced.
The attack happened during Athens’ peak tourism season, and Acropolis site operations don’t appear to be affected.
