Bob Mackie, fashion designer who dressed Cher, dies at 87

Sept. 14 (UPI) — Legendary costume and fashion designer Bob Mackie has died.

The Emmy- and Tony-winning designer died Monday, his team announced in a statement on social media. He was 87.

“It is with a heavy heart that we share the news that Mr. Bob Mackie passed away today. He lived his 87 years to the fullest, fulfilling his dream of being a Fashion and Costume Designer, which is all he ever wanted to do,” the post reads.

“His genius and extraordinary designs will live on forever, continuing to bring beauty into this world.”

Mackie, known as the “Sultan of Sequins,” created dazzling, sparkling looks for Cher, Carol Burnett and Diana Ross, along with the late Dolly Parton, Tina Turner and Whitney Houston.

He famously sketched the design for the sparkling, nude-colored Jean Louis gown that late actress Marilyn Monroe wore to sing “Happy Birthday” to then-President John F. Kennedy in 1962.
