June 12 (UPI) — A U.S. Border Patrol agent was shot in Arizona near the border with Mexico on Tuesday morning, authorities said.

U.S. Customs and Border Patrol in Arizona confirmed the agent was shot south of the town of Arivaca and transported to an area hospital for treatment.

“Several subjects in the area were taken into custody,” the CBP said.

Further details weren’t immediately made available, but the agency said it was investigating the shooting along with the FBI.

Last month the CBP said one of its officers fatally shot an undocumented woman in the head after he was allegedly attacked by a group of immigrants along the Texas-Mexico border.

The agency said the agent came under attack by multiple subjects using blunt objects and fired at least one round from his service-issued firearm, causing the rest of the group to flee the scene.
