May 11 (UPI) — To stop U.S. companies from favoring foreign workers, the Justice Department announced a new partnership Friday to eliminate employer fraud, abuse, and discrimination.
Officials said the partnership with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services will increase communication between the agencies and help identify, investigate, and prosecute employers who are violating immigration laws and discriminating against U.S. workers.
John Gore, acting assistant attorney general of the civil rights division, said the agreement was formed in the spirit of President Donald Trump’s executive order last year to “buy American, hire American.”
USCIS Director L. Francis Cissna said the deal will help investigators coordinate when they work on the same issues at different agencies.
“Breaking down silos and working with our federal partners to combat employment discrimination will help ensure that U.S. workers have the advocate they need at the highest level,” Cissna said.
Last year, the Justice Department division started an initiative to ensure U.S. workers were not passed over for foreign laborers willing to accept lower wages.
The initiative resulted in dozens of investigations and multiple lawsuits involving employers found to be in violation.
