Dec. 18 (UPI) — The evidentiary hearing in the case against Luigi Mangione in Manhattan ended Thursday and the judge said he will give a decision by May 18.

The lawyers rested their cases in the nine-day hearing on Thursday, with defense attorneys not calling any witnesses.

Mangione, 27, allegedly shot and killed United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson in December 2024 in Manhattan as Thompson, 50, was on his way to an investors’ meeting. He was arrested five days later in an Altoona, Pa., McDonald’s. He also faces federal charges, for which he could get the death penalty.

Mangione’s lawyers want the evidence seized by police in Pennsylvania suppressed so that it can’t be used at trial. They argue that the evidence was taken without a warrant and things that Mangione said shouldn’t be used because he was read his Miranda rights late.

Judge Gregory Carro said the defense has until Jan. 29 to make its final argument in writing. Prosecutors have until March 5. The defense then has two weeks after that to submit a reply, ABC News reported.

The hearing saw 17 prosecution witnesses speak about Mangione’s arrest and imprisonment in Altoona and the seizure of evidence. The physical evidence seized included a backpack, a notebook, a gun and gun magazine.
