June 26 (UPI) — The Kinks frontman Ray Davies has said in a new interview that the band is getting back together and is working on a new album.
Davies made the comments Monday during an interview with Channel 4 where he received a phone call from Kinks drummer Mick Avory during the middle of the conversation. Davies then confirmed that they were meeting up and was working on a new album inspired by the Rolling Stones.
“We’ve been talking about it because I’ve got all these songs that I wrote, then the band – not broke up, we parted company – and I think it’s kind of an appropriate time to do it,” he said after getting off the phone.
Davies, when asked for clarification about reuniting said “Officially we are, yes… In the pub later on.” The interview also included the rocker praising the Rolling Stones and how their well-organized comeback and U.K. tour inspired him.
“The Kinks will probably be playing the local bar,” he said in comparison to the Rolling Stones.
The Kinks were founded in 1963 by Davies, his brother Dave, Avory and bassist Pete Quaife who died in 2010. The group was known for songs such as “You Really Got Me,” “All Day and All of the Night,” “A Well-Respected Man,” “Waterloo Sunset” and “Lola” among others. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990 before splitting up that same decade.
“The trouble is, the two remaining members, my brother Dave and Mick, never got along very well. But I’ve made that work in the studio and it’s fired me up to make them play harder, and with fire,” Davies also said in the interview.
Davies is set to release a new album, Our Country: Americana II on Friday, his second collaboration with the Jayhawks.
