Seattle Mariners’ James Paxton no-hits Toronto Blue Jays

May 8 (UPI) — Seattle Mariners pitcher James Paxton pitched a no-hitter against the Toronto Blue Jays Tuesday at Rogers Centre in Toronto, Ontario.

And he had some help from third baseman Kyle Seager.

The Canada native allowed three walks while tossing seven strikeouts in the win. Paxton entered the game leading the league with 14 strikeouts per nine innings, while posting a 4.19 ERA and a 1-1 record in seven starts. He decreased his ERA to 3.40 with the performance. He needed 99 pitches for the complete game gem.

Seager came up big for Paxton to end the seventh inning. The Mariners third baseman was manning the hot corner during a Kevin Pillar at-bat. Pillar smacked a Paxton fastball down the third base line. Seager dove to his right, making the stop on the baseball. He then jumped up and threw a one-hopper to first base, barely getting Pillar for the third out of the frame.

Mariners left fielder Ben Gamel provided more aid for Paxton in the bottom of the eighth frame when he made a running catch against the left center field wall.

Robinson Cano put the Mariners on the board offensively, bringing in Gamel on an RBI ground out in the top of the third inning. Nelson Cruz knocked in the Mariners’ second run with an RBI single in the same inning.

Mike Zunino increased the lead to 4-0 with a two-run home run in the top of the fourth frame. Mitch Haniger brought in the Mariners’ final run on a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning.

Paxton’s last three pitches of Tuesday’s win clocked in at 98 mph, 100 mph and 99 mph.
