Jan. 1 (UPI) — A body found in San Antonio, Texas, is that of missing woman Camila Mendoza Olmos who disappeared on the morning of Christmas Eve.
The medical examiner said the 19-year-old died by suicide from a gunshot wound to the head, the sheriff’s office said.
“This is certainly not the outcome we were hoping for,” Sheriff Javier Salazar said.
Her family thanked the community for support and prayers.
“In the name of the Olmos family, we want to give a humble and heartfelt thank you to all the news reporters, churches, friends, families, and communities for your support and prayers. Our beloved Camila Mendoza Olmos is now with the Good Lord.
“We kindly ask that you please respect our pain and, most importantly, keep my cousin Rosario — Camila’s mom — and my nephew Carlos — Camila’s brother — in your prayers during this incredibly difficult time. Thank you, and God bless you all,” the family said in a statement.
Mendoza Olmos’ body was found Tuesday afternoon in a field at the Burnin’ Bush landscaping company behind her home. The company said it would be closed Thursday but would open the gates for those who want to pay their respects.
“As we welcome the New Year, we ask that it be filled with prayers, love, and comforting thoughts for the family,” the post said.
Mendoza Olmos went on regular morning walks, her mother had told police. She had also been going through a difficult time. Police said a gun was found near her home, and a gun belonging to a family member had gone missing from the home at the same time. It hasn’t been confirmed if the gun found near her body is the missing one.
