David Perdue Advances to GOP Runoff in Georgia Senate Race

ATLANTA (AP) — Former Dollar General CEO David Perdue has advanced to a GOP runoff in Georgia’s hotly contested Senate race that will eventually help determine which party controls Congress.

Who Perdue will face in the July 22 runoff has yet to be determined. The race was too close to call Tuesday evening.

In unofficial returns, Perdue had nearly 30 percent of the vote with 62 percent of precincts reporting. Rep. Jack Kingston of Savannah and former Secretary of State Karen Handel appeared to be battling for the second spot.

Earlier, former nonprofit CEO Michelle Nunn won the Democratic primary and will face the eventual GOP nominee.

The race is among a dozen being watched nationally, as Republicans need to gain just six seats to claim a Senate majority and can’t afford to lose the Georgia seat.
