Gloria Allred, the attorney representing several of the women who have accused comedian Bill Cosby of sexual assault, said Wednesday that Cosby should follow the example of Alan Dershowitz and waive all statute of limitations defenses if he truly believes he is innocent.

Dershowitz, the famed defense attorney and reitred Harvard professor, has been accused by “Jane Doe #3” of sexual assault in a case challenging the plea bargain of his former client, Jeffrey Epstein. Dershowitz is not being sued or charged, and vehemently denies the claims. He has challenged “Jane Doe #3” to file criminal charges against him, offering to waive the statute of limitations in order to prove his innocence–and her dishonesty–in a court of law.

Allred told a press conference on Jan. 7 that Cosby should, as Dershowitz has done, offer to waive the statute of limitations for his accusers. The Huffington Post reports: “She pointed to the actions of Alan Dershowitz, the famous criminal lawyer who was recently named in an alleged underage prostitution and sexual abuse scandal who invited his accuser to sue, with the stipulation that he would not invoke the statute and allow the case to proceed.”

Cosby has declined to do so, and has generally sought to avoid responding to the claims.
