Chelsea Clinton Graces Cover of Elle on Eve of Hillary’s 2016 Announcement

ELLE Magazine has released excerpts from its May 2015 Chelsea Clinton feature, wherein the former First Child discusses motherhood, the No Ceilings Project, and the importance of having a woman president.

During their sit down, ELLE editor-at-large Rachael Combe asked Chelsea her opinions on the symbology of having a female president and if she believes it would make a positive change for our country.

“We’ve made real progress on legal protections for women, but in no way are women at parity to men in our country in the workplace,” said the younger Clinton. “And if we look in the political sphere, it is challenging to me that women comprising 20 percent of Congress is treated as a real success. Since when did 20 percent become the definition of equality?”

Chelsea takes part in the No Ceilings Project which advocates for equal opportunity for women and girls in all aspects of life.

She stated:

…When you ask about the importance of having a woman president, absolutely it’s important, for, yes, symbolic reasons—symbols are important; it is important who and what we choose to elevate, and to celebrate. And one of our core values in this country is that we are the land of equal opportunity, but when equal hasn’t yet included gender, there is a fundamental challenge there that, I believe, having our first woman president—whenever that is—will help resolve.

Clinton believes when women have been in positions of leadership, they have had varying degrees of success versus their male counterparts, but believes the presence of female leadership is all-important.

“Who sits around the table matters. And who sits at the head of the table matters, too,” she concluded.

The release of the ELLE interview comes likely hours prior to an announcement that Hillary will officially enter the 2016 presidential race this coming weekend.

The May 2015 issue hits newsstands nationwide on April 21.
