Sunday on his HBO “Last Week Tonight” program, host John Oliver defended the Internal Revenue Service and criticized the Republican-controlled Congress for starving the tax-collecting agency of funding.
“The fact is, blaming the IRS because you hate paying your taxes is a bit like slapping your checkout clerk because the price of eggs has gone up,” he said. “It’s not her fault. She’s just trying to help you get out of the store.”
Oliver closed the segment with a singer Michael Bolton with a song to the tune “How Am I Supposed to Live Without You?” to express what a necessity the IRS was.
