On Monday, Gabby Giffords cheered Oregon’s house for supporting SB 941 — a bill to require background checks for all gun sales, public or private. She did not mention that her attacker, Jared Loughner, passed a background check to acquire the gun he then used to attack her in 2011.
According to KPTV, Giffords released a statement saying:
“Today, Oregon’s leaders did the responsible thing: they stood up to the gun lobby and stood up for a commonsense law that will make Oregonians safer.”
Giffords did not mention that Jared and Amanda Miller (Las Vegas), Aaron Ybarra (Seattle Pacific University), Elliot Rodger (Santa Barabara), Ivan Lopez (Fort Hood 2014), Darion Marcus Aguilar (Maryland mall), Karl Halverson Pierson (Arapahoe High School), Paul Ciancia (LAX), and Aaron Alexis (DC Navy Yard), all got their guns through background checks, too.
Giffords’s statement continued: “This victory for responsibility in Oregon sends a clear message to the folks in Washington, D.C.: if Congress is not willing to act to reduce gun violence, states around the country can and will take the matter into their own hands.” She did not mention that James Holmes (Aurora theater), Nidal Hasan (Fort Hood 2009), Jiverly Wong (Binghamton), Seung-Hui Cho (Virginia Tech), and Naveed Haq (Seattle), all passed background checks for their guns as well.
After passing background checks, these 15 people took a total of 103 innocent lives and injured many others, including Gabby Giffords. Yet Giffords is telling the people of Oregon that background checks are a way to reduce gun violence.
