On Tuesday, gun control Representative Mike Thompson (D-CA-5th) attended a Congressional “Domestic Violence and Guns” hearing and suggested that gun control — specifically, the expansion of background checks — is good for women and would prevent deaths in domestic abuse situations.
According to Real Clear Politics, Reps. Rosa DeLauro (D-CT-3rd) and Debbie Dingell (D-MI-12th) attended the hearing as well.
DeLauro “cited a 2014 Center for American Progress report showing that 6,410 American women were murdered by an intimate partner using a gun between 2001 and 2012.” She added, “This is truly a national epidemic of violence.” Dingell told the story of her own mother being threatened by her father with a gun when Dingell was but a child.
Neither DeLauro or Dingell mentioned the more recent example of Carol Bowne, the Berlin Township New Jersey woman who was defenseless against a domestic attacker on June 3 because gun control prevented her from buying a gun when she needed it.
Representative Thompson did not mention how the constraints of gun control negatively impacted Bowne either. Instead, he said the slain women cited by DeLauro “would still be with us today if we had common-sense laws like comprehensive background checks on the books.”
Thompson stood with Gabby Giffords to re-launch a Congressional push for expanded background checks on March 4, and has cited them a as part of the remedy for domestic violence, criminal behavior, and dangers tied to mental illness ever since.
But he never mentions the fact that Giffords’ own attacker — Jared Loughner — passed a background check to get the gun with which he shot her. Nor does Thompson mention that Elton Simpson and Nadir Soofi (Garland), Jared and Amanda Miller (Las Vegas), Elliot Rodger (Santa Barabara), Ivan Lopez (Fort Hood 2014), Darion Marcus Aguilar (Maryland mall), Karl Halverson Pierson (Arapahoe High School), Paul Ciancia (LAX), Andrew John Engeldinger (Minneapolis), Aaron Alexis (DC Navy Yard), Tennis Melvin Maynard (West Virginia), James Holmes (Aurora theater), Nidal Hasan (Fort Hood 2009), Jiverly Wong (Binghamton), Seung-Hui Cho (Virginia Tech), Naveed Haq (Seattle), and Mark Barton (Atlanta) all got their guns by passing background checks.
