GOP frontrunner Donald Trump – despite his spat with the Pope last week – won the most Catholic county in South Carolina.

Trump won Beaufort County with roughly 30 percent of the vote. Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL), a Catholic, came in second.

“Beaufort County is the most densely Catholic populated county from North Carolina to Georgia. This county has been a haven for retirees and we have experienced monumental growth in our Catholic parishes in this county,” Director of the South Carolina Catholic Conference Michael Acquilano told Breitbart News.

However, Acquilano doesn’t believe Trump’s results in Beaufort will foreshadow the Catholic vote in the general election later this year.

“The Catholic vote is difficult to predict,” he explained. “As Catholics we are morally obligated to vote as it is part of our dual heritage as faithful Christians and American citizens. Catholics come from varying backgrounds and place emphasis on different issues as they consider who to vote for in elections. Mr. Trump’s success in Beaufort County should not be seen as a precursor for the remainder of the election cycle.”
