Miami Mayor Francis Suarez tested positive for the novel coronavirus after attending an event alongside Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro and his staff members, one of whom contracted the virus.
While Suarez assured the Miami Herald that he is feeling healthy, he confirmed that he has contracted the virus.
“It is confirmed that I have the coronavirus,” Suarez said. “I did test positive for it.”
“I’m concerned for people who have had some measure of contact with me,” he continued, urging those who have been around him to take extra precautions.
“If we did not shake hands or you did not come into contact with me if I coughed or sneezed, there is no action you need to take whatsoever,” he said.
“If we did, however, touch or shake hands, or if I sneezed or coughed near you since Monday, it is recommended that you self-isolate for 14 days, but you do not need to get tested,” he continued.
“After speaking with medical personnel, I will continue to follow Department of Health protocol and remain isolated while I lead our government remotely,” he added.
His announcement follows Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro’s visit to the state alongside his communications secretary Fabio Wajngarten, who tested positive for the virus on Thursday. Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) announced the extension of his own self-quarantine following his recent visit to Mar-a-Lago, where Bolsonaro and his team also stopped.
