Mark Mone, the chancellor of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee released a statement following MILO’s talk at the university, condemning what he described as an “encouragement of hate and harassment.”
In the statement, Mone said that although the university is prohibited by law from preventing a speaker from using their facilities based on their political viewpoint, he supports the principle of freedom of expression “even if the speaker is controversial.”
However Mone said he took exception with MILO, adding that he “strongly condemns the belittling of others and their appearance, and the encouragement of hate and harassment.”
Mone added that he would “not stand silently by when a member of our campus community is personally and wrongly attacked,” after MILO referenced the case of a transgender student who accused the university of discrimination when he wasn’t allowed to use the women’s changing rooms.
He did not address MILO’s central point: the fact that the university chose the rights of men to use women’s bathrooms over women’s rights.
“I am disappointed that this speaker chose to attack a transgender student,” Mone said. “The inclusivity and safety of our campus are top priorities. Every member of our community should feel safe and valued, regardless of beliefs, race, sexual orientation, immigration or other status.”
Mone concluded the statement with a reference to Donald Trump’s victory in the presidential election, claiming that “we are at a pivotal moment in our nation’s history after a contentious and divisive election.”
“Join me on social media in using #UWMstandstogether to tell our city, state and nation about the wonderful things happening on our campus and the valuable contributions of our students, faculty and staff,” he added.
Mone’s statement included no condemnation of the communist protesters who attacked MILO’s video producer, Matt Perdie, on campus.
