L.A. Olympics 2024: Los Angeles Wants Summer Games

Los Angeles, looking for any way to bring money into the cash-starved city, has entered a bid to host the Summer Olympic Games in 2024.

The United States Olympic Committee sent letters to 35 U.S. cities in an attempt to find a city willing to bring in the Games. Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa wrote back, “We are proud of our city’s sports heritage and tradition, and we stand ready to work with you to bring the Olympic Games back to the United States.”

The last Olympic games in the United States were held in Atlanta in 1996.

Villaraigosa’s bid included a letter from Southern California Committee for the Olympic Games, with luminaries such as Tom Hanks, Magic Johnson, and Olympic gold medal winner Janet Evans adding their signatures.

The Olympic Games were held in Los Angeles in 1932 and 1984. One of the city’s main thoroughfares, 10th street, was renamed Olympic Boulevard after the 1932 Games.
