Pot Tax: Sacramento Politicians ‘Jonesing’ for a Spending Fix

With Sacramento politicians desperate to find a new source of continuous tax revenue, the state’s Blue Ribbon Commission on Marijuana Policy has just published a study, “Pathways Report Policy Options for Regulating Marijuana In California,” as a precursor to sponsoring a 2016 ballot initiative to legalize recreational pot use.

Newsom’s Base: LGBT Donors, Voters

California Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom, who is already running for governor in 2018, is tapping his base in the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community to raise money for this campaign and build voter support. Newsom rraised $2.7 million for his prospective 2016 gubernatorial campaign between February and June, the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

Jerry Brown Oddly Silent as CA Dems Congratulate Hillary

“Here we go! Super excited about ‪@hillaryclinton running for President!!” gushed California Lt. Governor Gavin Newsom on Twitter Sunday following Hillary Clinton’s tepid Presidential announcement. The message was one of many strong reactions pronounced by California’s statewide leaders–all Democrats. However, Gov. Jerry Brown was not among them.

California Polls Set Tough Challenge for Republicans

Despite the presence of Republican presidential contenders in the Golden State this weekend, a pair of Field Polls released late last week look grim for the GOP. One shows President Barack Obama’s approval rating among likely voters in the Golden State rising to 57%, “the best appraisal of Obama in over two years by Californians.” The other shows that fewer than one in five Californians approve of Congress, and a near-majority say Republican control of both houses of Congress is a bad thing.

Report: Kamala Harris to Announce Run for Boxer’s Seat

California’s Attorney General Kamala Harris is expected to announce Tuesday that she will be seeking retiring Senator Barbara Boxer’s seat in 2016. The anticipated news comes on the heels of Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom’s Monday Facebook announcement that he would not be competing for Boxer’s seat.
