Two Mexican federal agents died in a shootout while trying to apprehend an FBI fugitive wanted for the murder of a soccer coach within the New York Red Bulls club.

The fatal shootout took place this week in Acatlan de Osorio, Puebla, according to Mexico’s Attorney General.

The two agents, whose names have not been released, were serving an arrest warrant against Orlando Orea for the 2012 murder of MLS coach Mike Jones in New York. In October 2012, Mike Jones was stabbed to death, the BBC reported. The motive for the murder remains unclear, however, local news outlets attributed the stabbing to a bar fight. The warrant was issued to extradite Orea on behalf of the FBI.

After the shooting in Puebla, Mexican authorities set off a large-scale manhunt that eventually led to Orea’s whereabouts. Mexico’s Criminal Investigation Agency confirmed Orea’s arrest one day after the murder of the two agents. The agency credited the Mexican Navy for the fugitive’s collar.

According to Mexico’s Sin Embargo, the FBI fugitive flew to Mexico shortly after the 2012 murder and was hiding there ever since. Authorities came close to capturing Orea twice in Mexico City and Puebla.
