San Jose police arrested 18-year-old transient Maria Garate and charged her with attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, and hate-crime charges after she entered a San Jose area Wal-Mart around 11 am Wednesday and swung a crowbar at a 4-year-old girl shopping with her father.
The girl’s father jumped in and was able to keep his daughter away from Garate and her crowbar. The girl was taken to the hospital, but has since been released. The attack appears to be random, the girl’s father says he doesn’t know Garate, and San Jose Police Lt. Jason Dwyer told NBC Bay Area “She entered the store with the weapon, which makes us believe she was going to attack somebody no matter what.”
