Rubio to Meet with Facebook's Zuckerberg

Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL), a member of the Senate’s immigration “Gang of Eight,” will meet Wednesday with Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, ABC News reports.

“Though it is unknown what the senator and Facebook founder are planning to discuss, one topic of conversation could be immigration reform,” ABC’s Artette Saenz wrote on Tuesday night. “Zuckerberg waded into the immigration debate earlier this year when he formed FWD.us, a group focused on advocating for immigration reform.”

Since the Senate passed its immigration reform bill, Rubio has maintained a low profile on immigration and shifted his focus to support the defunding of the Affordable Care Act in the upcoming Continuing Resolution (CR) that funds the government.

Rubio has seen his political capital crash after pushing amnesty for America’s at least 11 million illegal immigrants, falling in polls of GOP voters in New Hampshire and Iowa where he was at or near the top of the potential 2016 field before becoming a public advocate for the immigration bill.

Zuckerberg has spent millions of dollars of his own money through his FWD.us group pushing for the passage of an immigration reform package.

The Tampa Bay Times, which first reported the news of the coming Rubio-Zuckerberg summit in California, noted that Zuckerberg spent a lot of that money running advertisements touting legalization–ads that featured Rubio.

Rubio’s meeting with Zuckerberg comes amid a California fundraising trip for his PAC Reclaim America, The Tampa Bay Times‘ Alex Leary reported. “Despite the criticism Rubio has gotten from some conservatives over immigration, he continues to raise big,” Leary wrote. “His various committees took in about $3 million in the second quarter of this year.”

Several other GOP senators who supported the bill who are up for reelection this cycle have drawn primary challengers. Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) has three challengers, and a challenger to Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-TN) announced his candidacy with a focus on his immigration vote on Tuesday. Rubio is not up for reelection until 2016.
