'Black Friday' Brawl: Officer Injured at California Wal-Mart on Thanksgiving

“Black Friday” sales began early this year, with many retailers opening on Thanksgiving, and lines forming outside many others. Earlier sales meant earlier brawls, with a fight breaking out at a Rialto, California Wal-Mart at 6:45 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day, as other families were still finishing Thanksgiving dinner.

According to the local CBS News affiliate, a scuffle broke out among three individuals, and an officer who tried to intervened was injured. Two of the shoppers-turned-combatants were arrested for assault. Shopping went on, however, despite the scuffle, as customers piled their shopping carts high with discounted goods.

Update: The San Bernadino Sun reports that the officer was taken to hospital with a broken wrist, and that there were three fights in total, “two of which were inside over merchandise and the third outside that caused injury to the officer.” A police helicopter assisted in monitoring and calming the violence.
