The newfound zest for rectifying “income inequality” by the left wing of the Democratic Party has the party’s old standard-bearers running scared. It turns out that the vast majority of Democratic Party head honchos are enormously wealthy, live lives of incredible privilege, and don’t shell out too much in charity.
They do have a solution, however: they lie about it.
Here are the top five instances of Democrats playing up fake blue collar bona fides from the last two weeks alone:
Vice President Joe Biden. On Monday, Biden said, “if you excuse, as we used to say in the Senate, a point of personal privilege, I can speak a little bit from my own experience.” He then proceeded to whine about his “mildly expensive suit” and state, “I have no savings accounts…I don’t own a single stock or bond.”
Poor Joe does have the smallest portfolio of anybody in the Obama administration. But that’s because he has six liabilities of $337,000, including mortgages and home equity loans, two lines of credit, and a loan against his life insurance policy. He apparently has a net worth somewhere between $39,000 and $800,000. Biden makes $230,700 per year as vice president.
Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. On June 9, Clinton infamously explained, “We came out of the White House not only dead broke, but in debt.” The Clintons had just put down payments on two highly-expensive pieces of property, a $1.7 million home in Chappaqua, New York, and one for $2.85 million in Washington, D.C.
Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Again. On Saturday, The Guardian printed an interview with Clinton in which she explained that the American people loved her and her husband because they are truly common folk: “They don’t see me as part of the problem. Because we pay ordinary income tax, unlike a lot of people who are truly well off, not to name names; and we’ve done it through dint of hard work.” The Clintons’ net worth is well over $100 million, and she earned an $8 million advance for Living History.
Michelle Obama. Last week, Michelle Obama told MSN.com that after graduating Harvard Law School and earning a cushy salary from the University of Chicago Medical Center, she still struggled to feed her kids: “Before coming to the White House, I struggled, as a working parent with a traveling, busy husband, to figure out how to feed my kids healthy, and I didn’t get it right. I thought to myself, if a Princeton and Harvard-educated professional woman doesn’t know how to adequately feed her kids, then what are other parents going through who don’t have access to the information I have?” So she’ll now tell us what to eat.
Harry Reid. On Thursday, Senator Harry Reid (D-NV) laughably claimed that Democrats are the party of the impoverished donors. “Decisions by the Supreme Court have left the American people with the status quo in which one side’s billionaires are pitted against the other side’s billionaires,” Reid stated. “Except one side does not have any billionaires.”
Right. Except for George Soros, Tom Steyer, David Shah, and others.
But these aren’t the only examples. Virtually every Democrat feels the necessity to explain how his or her great wealth is no obstacle to populism.
