Bloomberg Gun Control Group's Endorsements Packed with Incumbents

Michael Bloomberg’s Everytown for Gun Safety endorsed several candidates for federal office to make Congress more gun-control-friendly in the November 2014 elections, most of whom are incumbents.

Of the 78 the group endorsed, 68 are incumbents, who offer no change whatsoever.

According to The Wall Street Journal, 53 of the 61 House endorsements and 15 of 17 Senate endorsements are for incumbents–14 Democrats and pro-gun control Senator Susan Collins (R-ME).

Everytown also endorsed Democrat Representatives Bruce Braley (IA) and Gary Peters (MI), who “are running to hold Democrat Senate seats in their states.”

Overall, the endorsement list steers clear “of races where [gun control] candidates face an uphill climb.” And WSJ suggests this is so Everytown and other gun control interest groups can “juice their electoral records.”

In other words, Bloomberg’s group will not win the congressional change they claim to pursue, but they will be able to point to the re-election of numerous incumbents as proof that their endorsement mattered.
