Thursday Call Sheet: Want to Cancel your Cable?

QUESTION OF THE DAY: HOW DO I STREAM ON TELEVISION?

From an email:

[Y]ou have convinced me on the dumping of cable issue. My question is, how/what is the best method of going to streaming? I am unsure as to the best method of getting streaming content to my TV. I am pretty sure I don’t want to use my desktop computer to do it, I would need a powerful video card, I suspect.

Great question. It's easy to forget that this is a new technology and how foreign it once seemed.. Thankfully, the answer is a simple one…

A Roku, Xbox, or a Blu-ray player with the wireless modem built in, and you are on your way to streaming on your television.

My only advice is to get yourself hooked up before cancelling anything. Wait a month or so to make sure you’re making the right choice.

BEST BUY TO CLOSE 50 STORES, CUT STAFF AS FOCUS SHIFTS TO MOBILE

In many ways, you are looking at another casualty of the lack of home video sales, an area that Best Buy even cut back on some time ago -- shrinking that section of the store.

Of course, Internet sales and a protracted recession probably haven't helped either.

Not that anyone cares, but over a quarter century ago I worked at one of the first Best Buys to open up in the Milwaukee area. Last I saw the store was still there. Believe it or not, I did not work in any department related to television or movies; I sold appliances. Was pretty good too, especially at fast-talking people into those obnoxiously high-priced extended warranties. Man, did they push those. Pure profit. About 5% of your total sales were expected to be extended warranties.

I once sold a $109 microwave with a $39.99 three-year warranty. I'm not proud of that, but I was punished. For the next 17 years, God made me a bill collector.

WILL FERRELL ANNOUNCES 'ANCHORMAN' SEQUEL

I might have made it through about half of the original "Anchorman," which felt to me like a  somewhat clever and unnecessarily sleazy "SNL"  skit that refused to end.

BEHIND THE SCENES WITH JOSS WHEDON AND ‘THE AVENGERS’

All I have to say is that that's a whole lot of green screen.

ELIZABETH BANKS RETURNING TO '30 ROCK'

Why doesn’t she go on a rerun of "Pawn Stars?" More people would watch.

TRAILER FOR SARAH POLLEY'S 'TAKE THIS WALTZ' LOOKS PROMISING

If you haven't seen Polley's 2006 directorial debut "Away From Her," do so now. This is a very talented young director.

JUST A REMINDER THAT NO ONE WATCHES STEWART AND COLBERT

Sure, these are reruns…

Comedy Central, 11-11:30 p.m. “The Daily Show,” 0.9 million (in encore telecasts)

Comedy Central, 11:30 p.m.-midnight ET, “The Colbert Report,” 0.7 million (in encore telecasts)

…but still.

QUOTE OF THE DAY

If audiences end up supporting this film to any great extent beyond opening weekend we all deserve everything we get, be it demons from hell or a Clash of the Titans 3. Wrath of the Titans makes Transformers look like Masterpiece Theatre. Not even those audience members that use the weak excuse, "Well, what did you expect?" can get away with that here. This is a film that may easily go down as one of the worst of 2012 and to realize that this early in the year is quite an accomplishment.

CLASSIC PICK FOR FRIDAY, MARCH 30

6:00 AM EST: Rio Rita (1942) -- A pair of nitwits try to stop Nazis from infiltrating a Western ranch. Dir: S. Sylvan Simon Cast:  Bud Abbott, Lou Costello, Kathryn Grayson. BW-91 mins, TV-G.

One of those Abbott and Costello movies accessible enough for those who aren't Abbott and Costello fanatics. Above average story, MGM production values (The Boys were loaned out from their home Universal) and pretty good musical numbers.
