Charlotte Church Cautions Miley Cyrus on Flashing Skin for Record Sales
Charlotte Church can identify with Miley Cyrus.
Both performers started their careers in their teens, and Church says each felt the pressure to promote their budding sexuality by record producers eager to sell more product.
Those suggestions left a permanent mark on Church, which is why she is speaking out about the sexualization of pop stars in the Age of Miley.
What this industry seems to want of its women increasingly is sex objects that appear childlike. Take your clothes off, show you're an adult."
Talking about her own experience early in her career, she said: "There was a big clamor to cover my breasts as they wanted to keep me as young as possible. Then it became, 'You should definitely get them out, they look great....' "
She added that performances by the likes of Rihanna, Christina Aguilera and Cyrus, including her "twerking" at the MTV Video Music Awards, only help to continue gender stereotypes in the industry.
