Obama May Meet With New Iranian President

The White House is indicating President Obama may be open to meeting with new Iranian President Hassan Rouhani.

According to ABC News, the meeting could take place next week while both leaders are in New York City for the United Nations General Assembly.

If the meeting happens, it will be the first time a U.S. President has “met with an Iranian head of state since Jimmy Carter met with Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi in Tehran on New Year’s Eve in 1977.”

White House spokesman Jay Carney says no meeting is on the schedule yet but added: “I would just say that in general, it’s possible… The extended hand has been there from the moment the president was sworn into office.”

Carney also seemed to set up the focus of any possible talk: “I would say that we obviously notice a significant change in language and tone from the new Iranian government when compared to its predecessor. It’s rather dramatic.”
