On January 27th Ukranian President Viktor Yanukovych proposed to loosen anti-protest laws and “hold a vote of no confidence in the government.”
However, he stopped short of allowing the “snap presidential elections” protesters were demanding.
According to The Wall Street Journal, “the proposals are likely to be voted on in an extraordinary session of Parliament on [January 28th].”
Yanukovych is hoping the passage of these proposals will bring an “end to… [the] mass anti-government protests” that have marked the two months since he refused “a trade-and-political deal with the European Union in favor of ties with Russia.”
On January 24th Breitbart News reported that at least five people died and about 2000 were injured during protests in the days leading up the implementation of the anti-protest laws.
