May Day anti-government protests in Turkey were met with police, tear gas, and orders to disperse.
According to the BBC, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan warned protesters to “give up hopes” of gathering in Taksim Square to protest. However, “the main trades unions” responded on April 30 by saying they would protest anyway: “We will be in Taksim Square despite the irrational and illegal ban [on protesting].”
Moreover, union leaders said, “All roads lead to Taksim on May Day.”
In June thousands of anti-government protesters filled Taksim square, but were eventually cleared away by riot police. Since then, Erdogan’s party has been successful in local elections and Erdogan is “eyeing a run for the presidency in August.”
