France To Arm Kurds In Fight Against Islamic State

French President Francois Hollande says France will supply arms to Iraqi Kurds “in the coming hours.”

USA Today reports that Hollande received “the blessing of authorities in Baghdad” to do so.

A statement released from Hollande’s office said France is supplying arms “in response to the urgent need expressed by the regional authorities in Kurdistan.” BBC News reported on the statement, which also urged “the international community” to “step up its mobilization” to fight back IS.

UK Prime Minister David Cameron says plans are in the works for an international mission to rescue “the stranded Yazidis and that the UK “will play a role in the mission.”

The U.S. is providing various weapons for the Kurdish forces and sent an additional “130 military advisers to the Kurdish region.” The advisers were not sent for combat but to “assess the humanitarian situation.” At the same time, the U.S. has launched air strikes “against IS fighters in northern Iraq.”

The AP reports that France has not specified the types of weapons that will be supplied to the Kurds.
