According to Marianne Williamson’s website promoting her congressional bid for the 33rd district, it is time to stop wasteful defense spending and establish a “Green New Deal” to rebuild America with “cutting edge green technologies.”
Williamson claims that in this time of “climate catastrophe,” California should ensure that green energy and technology companies are encouraged to make their homes here in Southern California. The New Age Guru, who told the New York Times that people think of her as “new age nutcase, dragon lady, lightweight thinker,” is sorry to see traditional companies like Toyota leave the South Bay.
Moreover, the recent departure of Elon Musk’s solar energy company, Solar City, now taking 900 jobs out of state to Nevada, is a serious blow to the economy, according to Williamson. Yet, Williamson’s answer to how California can stop the corporate exodus is a bit short on specifics. According to her website, “We need to move forward with transcendent pragmatism that no career politician will bring; we need visionary and imaginative leadership.”
Although no specific plan is put forth by Williamson to fix the problems, she says that we need a “strategic and modern approach to our situation now… From expanding opportunities for space exploration and manufacturing, to repurposing of defense contractor’s missions toward modernized defense needs and disaster relief.”
Williamson offers no adequate reasons why Californians should not be paying more attention to creating more traditional energy jobs, given that California is sitting on the Monterey Shale Deposit. The New York Times reported that the deposit comprises “two-thirds of the United States’ total estimated shale oil reserves and covers 1,750 square miles from Southern to Central California. The Monterey Shale could turn California into the nation’s top oil-producing state and yield the kind of riches that far smaller shale oil deposits have showered on North Dakota and Texas.”
