Frank Castillo Third Pitcher from '97 Cubs Rotation to Die

When former Chicago Cubs pitcher Frank Castillo was found dead in a lake on Sunday, he became the third pitcher from Chicago’s 1997 starting rotation to pass away.

As the Chicago Daily Herald noted, Kevin Foster died of renal cancer in 2008 and Geremi Gonzalez died when he was struck by lightening in Venezuela that same year. Terry Mulholland and Steve Trachsel were the other starters in the rotation.

According to authorities, “Castillo was on a pontoon boat with a friend when he decided to go swimming” and was later founded dead of drowning near his home in Arizona.

Castillo’s family released a statement, which said: “Frank was a wonderful son, terrific brother, and an extraordinary father to his two beautiful girls. Everyone who knew Frank loved Frank. We are devastated by this loss.”
