LONDON, United Kingdom – Maria Sharapova tried to fight back, but she could not overcome Angelique Kerber on Tuesday. Kerber beat Sharapova 7-6(7), 4-6, 6-4 to advance to the Wimbledon quarterfinals.
Overall, Sharapova’s stats were better except for one: unforced errors. She had 43 compared to Kerber’s 11 and it would be her downfall. In the third set, Kerber had an opportunity to finish Sharapova, but her double fault allowed Sharapova to force another game.
Kerber went up big, but it did not stop Sharapova. She came back from 0-40 to deadlock at 40-40 and fought off six more match points in an attempt to tie it up at 5-5. But the seventh match point would be Kerber’s magic number when Sharapova hit the ball past the baseline.
Kerber was excited and happy at the end of the match.
“It’s unbelievable,” Kerber said. “It was such a tough match, playing to a high level, and it was so close. I’m so happy. She’s a great player on grass, but I was just focusing on myself and I’m so happy to be in the quarters.”
Third-seed Simona Halep is the only remaining top-five woman left in singles.
Kerber plays Eugenie Bouchard in the quarterfinals.
