Jonah Goldberg: Hillary Not 'Compelling,' Elizabeth Warren Should 'Jump in the Race'

On Monday’s “Special Report,” conservative columnist Jonah Goldberg criticized former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s book rollout, which has been fraught with gaffes.

Goldberg noted how often the pundit class tried to read into Hillary Clinton’s rhetoric as it might pertain to her potential 2016 presidential run.

“Well, I don’t think this administration has done anything on income inequality,” Goldberg said. “They have said a lot about income inequality as income inequality has gotten worse under Obama. I’m more in Charles [Krauthammer]’s position on this. I think that this is a momentary and surprising amateurish mess-up by these guys as they rolled out their book. But it reveals a larger problem. Hillary Clinton is utterly ironic figure in American life today. And what I mean by that is, it doesn’t matter what she says, the first thing that goes through people’s minds is I wonder what her motivation is for saying that. She could say, ‘These pretzels are making me thirsty’ and people would say gosh, I wonder who she is reaching out to in Iowa for saying that.”

Goldberg noted that in that calculating way, Hillary Clinton is much like her husband, former President Bill Clinton, but without the political prowess. That according to Goldberg makes Hillary Clinton a weak candidate and could open the door for Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) to throw her hat in the ring for the 2016 Democratic presidential nomination.

“She has this — everybody about her is calculating,” he continued. “And I think everybody about her husband was calculating, too. The difference is, is that Bill Clinton was a really gifted organic politician and Hillary Clinton isn’t. Hillary Clinton is the lady who comes up to you and says there is no eating in the library. She is not a compelling public figure. And if I were Elizabeth Warren, I would jump in the race today because she is an authentic, truth-telling kind of politician and it would cause utter panic in the Clinton camp.”
