Dem Senators Call for More Gun Show Regulations in Wake of Lafayette

Less than a week after John Russell Houser allegedly opened fire inside a Grand Theatre in Lafayette, Louisiana, Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY), Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), and Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT), called on their colleagues to join together and pass more regulations on gun shows.

Did Houser buy his gun at a gun show? No. He bought it at a pawn shop in Phenix, Alabama, and he passed a background check to do so.

But Schumer, Blumenthal, and Murphy are undaunted.

A July 28 press release emailed by the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence says the three Senators are pushing to expand “background checks to all gun sales made online and at gun shows.” They also pledge to give hundreds of millions to states that will comply.

Brady Campaign president Dan Gross added:

Sen. Schumer knows better than anybody what it takes to finish the job of expanding Brady background checks. When he was a member of the House, Sen. Schumer led the charge in passing the historic Brady Bill, which took seven votes over six years to finally pass. Every day of that fight was worth it in crimes prevented and lives saved. Every day of this one will be worth it too. We thank Senators Schumer, Blumenthal and Murphy for joining our call to expand life-saving Brady background checks.

It should be noted that public attackers and alleged attackers John Russell Houser (Lafayette), Muhammad Youssef Abdulazeez (Chattanooga), Dylann Roof (Charleston), Elton Simpson and Nadir Soofi (Garland), Jared and Amanda Miller (Las Vegas), Elliot Rodger (Santa Barabara), Ivan Lopez (Fort Hood 2014), Darion Marcus Aguilar (Maryland mall), Karl Halverson Pierson (Arapahoe High School), Paul Ciancia (LAX), Andrew John Engeldinger (Minneapolis), Aaron Alexis (DC Navy Yard), Tennis Melvin Maynard (West Virginia), Wade Michael Page (Sikh Temple), James Holmes (Aurora theater), Jared Loughner (Tucson), Nidal Hasan (Fort Hood 2009), Jiverly Wong (Binghamton), Seung-Hui Cho (Virginia Tech), Naveed Haq (Seattle), and Mark Barton (Atlanta), all passed background checks for their guns. Yet Schumer, Blumenthal, Murphy, and the Brady Campaign are pushing to expand the checks as a solution to public attacks in the wake of Lafayette?
