Sen. Marco Rubio is condemning President Obama’s actions to release five Taliban leaders in exchange for the release of Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl, after a congressional investigation revealed that President Obama clearly broke several laws and misled the public over the transfer.
“President Obama’s disregard for the law is stunning,” Rubio said in an exclusive statement to Breitbart News in reaction to the report. “His desperate efforts to close Guantanamo threaten U.S. security.”
The Taliban Five – Mohammad Fazl, Mohammed Nabi, Abdul Haq Wasiq, Mullah Norullah Nori, and Khairullah Khairkhwa – were freed from Guantánamo in 2014 in exchange for Bergdahl.
According to the report, some of the Taliban Five have reengaged in threatening activities since their release.
The White House dismissed the report yesterday, pointing out that Obama was merely acting on a “unique opportunity” to recover Sgt. Berghdal. The president has sought to empty the detainee facility at Guantanamo Bay and close it down before leaving office. Recent attempts to move forward on a plan were stalled after the terrorist attacks in Paris.
But Rubio explained to Breitbart News that if elected president, he would keep the prison open, arguing that it was important for national security.
“As President, I will keep the facility open and ensure that dangerous terrorists are kept off the battlefield and that our military, law enforcement, and intelligence professionals have the authorities and tools they need to obtain valuable intelligence from captured terrorists and prevent attacks on our homeland,” he said.
