Retired Neurosurgeon Dr. Ben Carson doesn’t think that the United States needs the border wall proposed by billionaire presidential candidate Donald Trump.

In an interview with Breitbart News, Carson said the security situation on the southern border was “disastrous” and that he wants a layered fence.

“It doesn’t need to be a wall, fence works just as well and is much less expensive and much easier to put up, but it has to be a layered fence,” he said in an interview with Breitbart News Chairman Stephen K. Bannon on Sirius XM Patriot channel 125.

Carson released his immigration plan Sunday, right before the Iowa caucuses on Monday.

During the interview, he explained why his plan would offer legal status to illegal immigrants currently in the United States.

“If they have a pristine record, a very clean record, and they want to be here as [legal] guest workers, then they have a six-month window in which to get registered,” he said, adding that they would need to pay back-taxes. “They would have legal status… [so] they wouldn’t have to hide underground anymore and be blackmailed and terrorized by people who take advantage of that situation,” Carson said.

Carson is currently polling in fourth place in Iowa, but recently announced nearly $23 million in fundraising in the fourth quarter.

“I say listen to your heart and not to the pundits,” he said ahead of the caucuses, arguing that he was a candidate who was “among the people” and had a “disdain” for big government.
