During an intimate round of golf Monday in Los Angeles with NBC’s Matt Lauer, of which part one aired Wednesday on Today, Bruce Jenner opened up about his involvement in a deadly car accident earlier this year.
Sixty-nine-year-old Kim Howe was killed in a collision on on Pacific Coast Highway near Malibu, CA, after being rear-ended by Jenner on February 7. The TV star could face a misdemeanor manslaughter charge over the wreck, pending the decision of Los Angeles County prosecutors, which could result in up to one-year in jail.
The former Olympian maintains he was obeying all traffic laws at the time of the accident, and expressed his biggest fear is ending up in a men’s jail, should he face charges.
“The media wants that picture, don’t they?” Jenner said of a possible stint in county. “That is the worst-case scenario… The men’s county jail. That’s the scary part. It is an enormous problem that they would put trans women in a men’s county jail.”
The TV star also told Lauer his memory of the incident is foggy, saying, “I remember it happening (but) that’s about it,” and that pending litigation prevented him from discussing it further.
“A tragedy like this, you’ll never get over it. You just learn to live with it the best you possibly can,” Jenner said.
Witnesses at the scene said Jenner was driving when he rear-ended Howe’s white sedan. The car was then reportedly forced into oncoming traffic, where a Humvee struck it head-on.
In all, eight people were involved in the accident.
Jenner also weighed-in on a controversial Halloween costume that uses his likeness, and hinted the LGBT community could probably benefit from lightening up a bit.
“I’m in on the joke… I don’t think it’s offensive at all,” Jenner said. “You’ve got to enjoy life. Life’s too short. I can’t get too upset about that type of stuff.”
