Spring 2006 Lieutenant General David Petraeus meets a graduate student named Paula Broadwell when he speaks at Harvard University. Petraeus allegedly slips her his card and tells her to contact him if she needs any help in her work on leadership.
2007 Petraeus is promoted to General.
2008 Broadwell emailed Petraeus about a paper she was writing on his theory of leadership. The two met for a run along the Potomac, and remained in touch thereafter.
In June 2010, Petraeus is tapped to replace Stanley McChrystal in Afghanistan. He holds the role of Commander of the International Security Assistance Force, June 2010 to July 2011. During this time, Broadwell visited Afghanistan six times to do research for Petraeus’ biography. She stayed a total of three months and was allowed close access to Petraeus.
In September 2011, Petraeus becomes CIA Director. Once he is stateside, Petraeus and Broadwell begin their affair, ending it in the summer of 2012.
January 2012, Broadwell’s book, “All In: The Education of David Petraeus,” is released.
April 2012 the Benghazi consulate is bombed.
June 2012 the Benghazi consulate is bombed again.
Also in June 2012, Jill Kelley reports that she’s receiving anonymous, threatening emails.
August 2012, the FBI determines Paula Broadwell was sending the emails. The affair between Petraeus and Broadwell is uncovered but the FBI and Attorney General Eric Holder sit on it.
Between April and September 2012, numerous requests for increased security in Benghazi are made. All of which were either ignored or denied.
August 15, 2012, State Dept Warned Benghazi Personnel Were Sitting Ducks.
9:40 a.m., September 11, 2012, the security manager of the small security force in the consulate puts out a desperate call for help. Roads around the consulate are being barricaded for what appears to be a pending attack. Also on the morning of September 11, security force members express concerns that Libyan Police were mapping the consulate for the attacks that would come.
Later in the day the attack takes place. Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other Americans are killed.
September 13, 2012, the FBI and The National Counterterrorism Center (NCTC) describe the attack as “premeditated.”
September 14, 2012, CIA Director Petraeus counters the FBI and the NCTC by claiming the Benghazi attack was “spontaneous.”
In late October 2012, Petraeus goes to Benghazi to investigate the attack and the events preceding it for himself.
November 6, 2012, Petraeus tells Director of National Security James Clapper about the affair with Broadwell. Clapper advises the CIA Director to resign.
November 9, 2012, Petraeus resigns his position in the CIA.
