NEW YORK, Dec. 13 (AP) - (Kyodo) The Dow Jones average briefly hit a record intraday high on Wednesday in New York, buoyed by strong U.S. economic indicators. At 10 a.m., the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 37.89 points from the previous day to 12,353.47. It briefly hit 12,368.61, surpassing the intraday record posted on Nov. 22.
The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite Index rose 7.10 points to 2,438.70.
Buying was stirred as the monthly retail sales for November topped the previous month for the first time in four months, underscoring brisk consumer spending. The market was also aided by high expectations for holiday retail sales.
But the upward pace of the Dow average slowed after hitting the intraday record, as traders remained cautious about the prospects of U.S. economic growth.
