Mexico City (AFP) – An American held in the shooting last week of a US consular official in Mexico’s western city of Guadalajara was deported to the United States late Monday, authorities here said.

The consular official was shot and wounded Friday in a brazen attack by a man wearing a black wig and a blue nurse’s uniform outside a shopping center garage in Mexico’s second biggest city.

Officials have not indicated the possible motive nor revealed the identities of the victim or the suspect.

A US government official told AFP the victim was a vice consul at the consulate in Guadalajara. Mexican authorities said he handled interviews of visa applicants.

Prosecutors said in a brief statement that although the suspect was being sent to the US, Mexican authorities would continue their probe into the crime.
