Cheap-energy plans to be announced

Energy secretary Ed Davey will on Tuesday unveil details of the government’s energy plans, which are expected to include David Cameron’s promise that all consumers automatically be put on the lowest tariff.

Davey will also say that energy companies will in future be forced to cut the number of tariffs offered to four in a bid to reduce consumer confusion, the Guardian reported.

The minister is set to outline the plans at a meeting of the energy select committee and fresh laws could be included in energy legislation due to be published within two weeks.

Cameron shocked the energy industry when he promised in parliament last month: “We will be legislating so that energy companies have to give the lowest tariff to their customers.”

Critics accused Cameron of misunderstanding proposals set out by regulator Ofgem and warned he would not be able to honour his promise.
