Two killed in British avalanche

A man and a woman were killed Thursday by an avalanche in the Scottish Highlands, police said, while another man was in a critical condition in hospital.

The Northern Constabulary said the avalanche happened in the Cairngorms, an area popular with hill walkers that is also home to three of Scotland’s five ski resorts.

The three climbers were airlifted to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary on the Scottish east coast, but two of them later died.

It is the latest in a series of avalanche incidents in the Scottish mountains in recent weeks.

A hillwalker died earlier this week during an expedition in the Cairngorms.

Earlier in February, three men survived falling 150 metres (nearly 500 feet) in an avalanche in the Coire an t-Sneachda area of the Cairngorms.

And last month an avalanche near the west coast killed four climbers from a party of six.
