Hong Kong to host Premier League's Asia Trophy

Hong Kong is to host next year’s Barclays Asia Trophy, which is held every two years as a preseason tournament for the Premier League, the city’s football association said Wednesday.

“The Premier League is happy to confirm its intention to hold the 2013 Barclays Asia Trophy in Hong Kong,” the Hong Kong Football Association said in a statement on behalf of the Premiership.

“Unfortunately at this stage we cannot confirm which teams will be taking part. We are looking forward to officially announcing our plans for the Trophy to Premier League fans in Hong Kong early next year,” it added.

Hong Kong hosted the last edition of the trophy in 2011, which saw Chelsea beat Aston Villa in the final 2-0.

The South China Morning Post said the decision to hold the trophy in Hong Kong again stemmed from the city’s strong Premiership fan base guaranteeing capacity crowds and the lack of major security concerns in the financial hub.
