Most British troops to leave Germany by 2016

Britain is set to announce on Tuesday the withdrawal of most of its troops from Germany — around 11,000 — by 2016 as part of a major restructuring plan.

Defence Secretary Philip Hammond will reveal details of an accelerated return that will see nearly two billion pounds being spent on new military homes and bases across the country.

The remaining 4,500 troops will be brought home a year earlier than planned in 2019, he is expected to say.

The troops are mainly expected to be redeployed in Salisbury Plain, Edinburgh, Leuchars, Catterick, Aldershot, Colchester, Stafford and the East Midlands.

The government will be spending around one billion pounds on 1,900 new accommodation for service families and 7,800 places for single soldiers which it is hoped will help boost the economy.

The rest is expected to be spent on refurbishing bases and building new infrastructure.

As part of the 2010 Strategic Defence and Security Review, the MoD faced an eight percent budget cut in real terms over four years, forcing a shrinking in the size of the military.

The government had already announced that it aimed to withdraw all 20,000 troops plus their families from Germany by 2020.

Around 4,000 troops have since arrived in Britain.
