DETROIT, Sept. 21 (UPI) — The Detroit Lions put running back Ameer Abdullah on injured reserve Wednesday morning.

Abdullah injured his foot in a Week 2 match up against the Tennessee Titans. The 23-year-old was looking like a breakout fantasy football candidate through two games this season, with 158 yards and a touchdown on 23 touches.

While on I.R., Abdullah officially can’t return to the Lions for at least eight weeks. Abdullah visited North Carolina foot specialist Dr. Robert Anderson Tuesday.

Theo Riddick will assume Abdullah’s role in the offense as the No. 1 running back. Rookie Dwayne Washington is also expected to have a role as Detroit’s short-yardage and goal line back.

NFL Network National Insider Ian Rapoport reported Monday that Abdullah sprained his foot. Initial X-Rays came back negative on the injury. During his rookie season, Abdullah had 780 yards from scrimmage and three touchdowns on 168 touches. He also returned kicks in 2015.

I see Riddick as a solid RB2 in Abdullah’s absence, with the ability to produce like an RB1 in a great match-up. He is an RB1 in PPR formats.
